Your file is saved on your Mac as a normal file. So you can save from anywhere, without any restriction, and you don't need do do the whole Eject/Mount disk. What it does is it saves the ENTIRE memory of the C64 into a file. iOS 7 or later ROM image from Mac Plus, Mac II and/or Mac 128K Disk images with Mac software.

That being said, because you are using an emulator, there's a MUCH better way to save your progress: by simply saving a "snapshot" of your current state.
